ISC Honorary Membership is conferred upon persons who have brought outstanding contributions to chemotherapy. The awardees in 2011, in conjunction with the 27th ICC, are:

Fernando Baquero is Research Professor in Bacterial Evolution at the Biomedical Research Foundation and Department of Microbiology of the Ramon y Cajal University Hospital, Madrid.
He has made major contributions to antimicrobial chemotherapy over many years resulting at the last count) in 360 scientific papers cited in PubMed.
His research interests are wide-ranging and include the biochemistry, genetics, population biology, ecology and evolution of antimicrobial resistance and bacterial virulence.

Javier Garau is Associate Professor of Medicine in the University of Barcelona, Spain and Head of the Department of Medicine the Mutua de Terrassa Hospital.
He has made important contributions to antimicrobial therapy, especially in the area of respiratory tract infections in which he is a world authority.
Professor Garau played a major part in the success of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, particularly in his role as Education Officer and President.

Helen Giamarellou is a distinguished Greek infectious diseases physician who has made important contributions to antimicrobial chemotherapy both in research and in the training of young physicians and microbiologists.
She has served on the Boards of national and international societies and also the Editorial Boards several prestigious journals. Her research interests are wide-ranging and include laboratory studies on antibacterial agents both in vitro and in animal models, and also clinical trials in humans. They have resulted in the publication of over 1’000 papers in scientific journals.
