Daniel Athanazio

Daniel was born in 1977 in Salvador, Brazil and is a Professor of Pathology in the Federal University of Bahia, Salvador, Brazil where his research focuses on leptospirosis.

Daniel and his co-workers will present the following work during the congress: ‘Experimental leptospiral infection in transgenic / mutant mice: attenuated nephritis in indicible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) knock-out C57BL/6 mice and pulmonary haemorrhages in SCID CB17 and recombinase activating gene Rag-1 knock-out C57BL/6 mice’.

Małgorzata Bodaszewska-Lubas

Małgorzata was born in 1981 in Krosno, Poland. She is currently a PhD student at the Jagiellonian University Medical College, Cracow looking at Group B Streptococci isolated from invasive infections and carriers.

Małgorzata and her co-workers will present their work during the congress entitled: ‘Dependence of Group B Streptococci adherence on serotypes and alphalike protein genes’.

Eirini Christaki

Eirini was born in 1977 in Thessaloniki, Greece and combines practicing medicine with studying for a PhD at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki on the pathophysiology of sepsis.

Eirini and her co-workers will present the following during the congress: ‘Interalpha inhibitor proteins exhibit antiviral activity against influenza strains in vitro’.

James Elston

James was born in 1977 in Kings Lynn, UK and currently works as a Specialist Registrar in Health Protection / Public Health in North Yorkshire whilst studying for an MSc in Public Health.

James and his co-workers will present the following during the congress: ‘Pneumococcal vaccination and invasive pneumococcal disease in East Yorkshire, UK’.

Ivan N. Ivanov

Ivan was born in 1978 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He gained his PhD in 2010 and currently works at the Reference Centre for Diagnosis and Control of Nosocomial Infections, Sofia, Bulgaria.

Ivan and his co-workers will present their work during the congress entitled: ‘Allele-specific-real-time PCR for costeffective canonical SNP genotyping of Bacillus anthracis’.

Olga Lastovetska

Olga was born in 1987 in Chernivtsky, Ukraine and is currently studying for her Master of Science Degree in Laboratory Medicine and pathobiology at the University of Toronto, Canada.

Olga and her co-workers will present the following work during the congress: ‘Surveillance of extended-spectrum cephalosporin- and carbapenem – resistance in Escherichia coli from the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, Canada.
