Meeting point and departure in front of Pinacoteca di Brera – Via Brera, 28
Price: € 51 per person
(incl. guide, entrance fee to Pinacoteca di Brera and Basilica di San Simpliciano)
A wonderful collection of fine art from Caravaggio to Bramante, often considered Lombardy's finest art collection. The Pinacoteca was first a collection of paintings for students of the Accademia di Belle Arti in the same building; the paintings were harvested from churches andmonasteries suppressed by the Napoleonic regime. Although it cannot compete with the Louvre or London's National Gallery, the Pinacoteca is of a size thatmakes for an easy visit. The collection is modest in breadth, but exquisite in quality, and covers works by major Italian artists from the 13th to the 20th century. From Brera the tour leads on foot to the Basilica of San Simpliciano. The site of the present churchwas occupied in the 3rd century AD by a Pagan cemetery. Here Saint Ambrogio began the construction of the Basilica Virginum “Basilica of the Virgins”, which was finished by his successor Simplicianus Soresini who was buried here.
